The Room · N° 04

The powder room is a jewel box. Small, used briefly, and the one place in the house where we recommend clients be brave — deep grounds, high-contrast pattern, and lacquered finishes.

Considerations

What to think through
before you choose.

  • i.1

    Small, but seen daily

The powder room is one of the most-photographed rooms in the modern house. Rooms of 20–40 sq ft can hold a mural that would overwhelm a larger space.

  • i.2

    Moisture

Powder rooms without showers are dry enough for paper, though we recommend a mildew-inhibiting primer and a wipeable topcoat for the finish.

  • i.3

    The vanity break

If the pattern is bold, plan the seam and drop to fall clean of the mirror. This is field-planning we do at survey — not something to leave to the installer.

  • i.4

    The ceiling

In a jewel-box room, we often paper the ceiling as well. Metallic wallcoverings on the ceiling read as lit at night.
