How Wallpaper Quantity Is Calculated

At Parfait, wallpaper quantity is calculated with precision — because wallpaper is not ordered the same way paint is measured.

While square footage helps us understand the general size of a project, wallpaper material is calculated based on drops, pattern repeat, usable material width, wall height, wall layout, and installation direction. Two rooms with the same square footage may require very different amounts of wallpaper.

What Affects Wallpaper Quantity and Layout

Wall width

Each wall is measured individually so we can calculate how many wallpaper strips — also called drops — are needed.

Wall height

The height of the wall determines the length of each drop.

Usable material width

Some wallpapers require trimming, which means the full printed width may not be the usable installation width.

Pattern repeat

If the wallpaper has a pattern, each strip must be matched correctly. This can increase the amount of material needed.

Wall layout and visual alignment

We review the room layout to determine where the pattern should start, where seams should fall, and how the design should align for the best visual effect. This is especially important for focal walls, powder rooms, murals, large-scale patterns, and spaces with many corners, openings, or architectural details.

Main focal point

In some rooms, the best layout is not simply the most material-efficient one. Sometimes we recommend centering or aligning the pattern based on the vanity, mirror, fireplace, bed wall, entry view, ceiling line, or another important visual point.

Murals and panel sets

Murals are calculated differently from standard wallpaper because image placement, scale, and panel sequence must be followed carefully.

Ceilings, soffits, niches, and returns

These areas require separate calculations — they may need a different layout direction or additional material.

Why We Do Not Calculate Wallpaper by Square Footage Alone

Wallpaper is installed in vertical or horizontal strips. The amount needed depends on how many full drops can be cut from each roll and how the pattern repeats across the wall.

A small powder room with a large pattern repeat may require more wallpaper than expected because each strip must align correctly. In other cases, the layout may require additional material to achieve a better visual result — especially when centering a pattern or aligning the design with an important feature.

Our Recommendation

Send us your approximate wall measurements first. Once your wallpaper selection is confirmed, our team will calculate the recommended quantity based on the material specifications, wall layout, and installation plan. Final wallpaper quantity should always be reviewed before placing an order.
